SUMMARY: Lead/support new product early phase activities related to supply base strategies, identification and alignment related to Medtronic Spinal and Biologics business unit strategic goals. Relay technology requirements and supply base capabilities to Strategic Procurement group for inclusion in product launch planning and supplier selection processes. Develop and enhance relationships with strategic sources of supply information across multiple business units. Trains and may supervise junior engineering staff. Position Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
• Build a knowledge data base of supplier technical and business capabilities to support the company’s dynamic and growing requirements. • Works with Product Development, Strategic Procurement and Concurrent Engineering to keep abreast of new product supply requirements. • Support and provide guidance to the product development teams for all early phase activities related to supply base management, identification and product concept sourcing. • Propose and lead strategic direction for supply management of new or key technologies. • Maintain business relationships with key industry and corporate supply base. Drives the establishment of strategic relationships with key targeted suppliers • In conjunction with Product Development, Concurrent Engineering and Quality identify and communicate those standards and specifications needed to execute effective procurement from the supply base. • Coordinate the appropriate communication of specifications, standards and technologies to the buying community and supply base. • Establishes purchasing parameters including but not limited to quality systems, engineering specifications, lead times, costs, product specifications, cost targets etc. to properly profile and identify needed supplier capabilities all within the confines of the Medtronic supplier management program • Actively visits and assesses supply base capabilities reporting out to Product Development, Concurrent Engineering and Strategic Procurement. • Collect, collate, analyze, and distribute marketplace research data in a timely fashion to enable Medtronic to gain and sustain a competitive edge in the industry. • Identifies the need with Strategic Procurement and Product Development to maintain and establish (if necessary) contractual agreements. Initiate and support the creation and execution of development and new supply agreements. • Keeps abreast of industry supply trends and events by tracking and or attending and reporting out key trade shows, academic symposiums and government hearings. • Works with the Supplier Quality Organization to ensure proper documentation and understanding of the Medtronic Spinal and Biologics supplier quality systems among new or potential suppliers. • Work with Strategic Procurement team to achieve Medtronic operational and business objectives. • Ability and willingness to train less experienced personnel on technical sourcing requirements. Basic Qualifications
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: BS in Engineering and 7 years of product development, engineering, or project management experience. Or, Masters in Engineering or related field and 5 years of product development, engineering or project management experience. Desired/Preferred Qualifications
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: • Experience in negotiations either directly or as part of a negotiating team. • Good communications skills, including the ability to persuasively present information both in writing and verbally • Knowledgeable regarding processes, policies and procedures governing supply chain planning, sourcing, releasing, receiving and settling. • Knowledgeable regarding medical device requirements and regulations. • Excellent organizational and analytical skills – plans work, executes plan and maintains organized work area. • Ability to work with others/function as part of a team. • Experienced professional – Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, and effective interaction with the ability to work well with a diverse group of people both within the organization as well as with people outside the company. Develops a team spirit in the department, and maintains good working relationships with other departments. • Ability to function well under pressure.
