Job Description: 

The Sr. Member of Technical Staff - Research performs technical project work of moderate scope within larger research projects.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:


  • This position supports the work of PMTS, LMTS, and DMTS in research.
  • This position proposes and works on research problems of moderate scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable, novel patterns.
  • This position has a complete understanding of relevant technical theories and concepts in a limited field of expertise and is capable of solving difficult technical problems.
  • Works under general supervision and guidance, and is capable of solving difficult technical problems. Job Contribution: Seasoned technical professional.
  • Contributes through proven technical expertise.
  • Has significant dept/functional impact.



    • KNOWLEDGE - SME within own discipline/specialty area; basic knowledge of other disciplines/specialty areas. Deep technical knowledge. Applies in-depth knowledge of discipline/specialty area standards/processes. Integrates industry experience and deep professional/technical knowledge. Technical leader and recognized expert on select ATT technologies/systems/procedures.
    • ANALYSIS/PROBLEM SOLVING - Solves unique problems through evaluative judgment/precedent. Independently applies sophisticated analysis in evaluating issues. Develops new concepts/methods/techniques for cross-functional initiatives. Recognizes/pursues alternative methods.
    • INDEPENDENCE - Guided by department goals/objectives. Exercises latitude in determining objectives/approaches to projects. Leads multiple small to medium sized projects and technical breadth.
    • CONTRIBUTION TO ATT TECHNOLOGY - Key contributor on complex projects/initiatives. Impacts current and future business opportunities through application of specialized technical/industry knowledge. Develops methods/techniques based on strategic project objectives.
    • COMMUNICATION - Mentors and provides technical guidance and explains advanced concepts to others in work area. Coordinates across multiple departments. Promotes active listening and open communication. Provides leadership/guidance to others.

Required Qualifications:


  • PhD or Masters of Science degree from an accredited university in an approved field such as Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or Mathematics. Refer to the Technical Title Plan for a complete list of degrees.
  • Entry into this title will require TCP Governance Board review.

Desired Qualifications:


  • Typically would have 0-4 years of relevant experience.

Environmental Requirements: This position may be responsible for contributing to ATTs compliance with environmental laws and regulations as applicable to its job function. This may include, but is not limited to, work related to fuel tanks, emergency and stand-by generators, boilers, hazardous waste, hazardous materials, batteries, manholes and vaults, water wells, linear and other construction projects, water discharge, or air emissions.

Ph.D - level researcher with proven research record in one or more of the following technical disciplines:

  • Theoretical Computer Science

  • Natural Language Processing

  • Network Traffic Analysis

  • Security & Cryptography

  • Speech Synthesis & Recognition

  • Speech/Text & Web Search/Mining

  • Spoken & Multimodal Dialog Systems

  • Statistics

  • Video & Multimedia Processing or Visualization/Computer Graphics
