Sr Network Engineer

This position is for a Sr Network Engineer to provide Front Line Engineering/Tier 2 support with a focus on network support.

Operational System Support - Provide support for internal systems. This includes monitoring and improving monitoring of these systems; responding to and ensuring resolution of operational issues reported by site personnel, 24X7 Monitoring centers, Tier 1 support, dataflow groups, and end users; and providing feedback to development engineers on how to improve stability and supportability. May also assist with installations, upgrades, and patches and ensure system is operating as expected after these actions.


Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree plus 14 years experience as a Network Engineer. Additional applicable experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Hardware
    • Documented experience/expertise configuring, installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting CISCO ISR/ASR routers, Nexus 5k switches, Catalyst 3750/4900/4948/6500 series switches. Able to effectively identify problematic network devices, devise/negotiate a plan to replace, and coordinate with Cisco TAC. Familiarity with multi-vendor switching appliances is a plus.
    • Knowledge of GVICs, SFPs, cable plant (fiber, copper) distance restrictions/configuration/troubleshooting techniques, and optimal vs. suboptimal environmental conditions
  • RedHat Linux OS knowledge (Rh4.3 and above)
    • Working knowledge of Linux based systems to include, but not limited to, ssh, scp, pki key infrastructure, kickstart, DNS, and rpm
    • Able to effectively navigate the filesystem, perform basic troubleshooting to include log analysis, system performance analysis, and process management
    • Readily able to install/remove applications, identify/modify network settings, and utilize SSH/SCP/SFTP.
    • RHCE preferred, RHCT minimum required
  • IP Subnetting
    • Able to subnet IPv4 space, recognize and translate CIDR notation to quantify IPv4 hosts/subnets
    • Be familiar with IPv6 addressing schemes/boundaries
  • IP Routing – WAN troubleshooting
    • Familiarity with various dynamic routing protocols (EIGRP, OSPF) with knowledge of convergence, optimization, and neighborship rules.
    • Understand MTU configurations and their impact on traffic flow
    • In depth knowledge of general network troubleshooting and tools necessary to perform related tasks: ping, tracepath, traceroute, nslookup, netstat, arp, dig, etc
  • Layer-2 traffic engineering
    • Familiarity with layer-2 access lists and static mac-address routing.
    • Able to build L2 aCLs and mac-address routing tables that adhere to design specifications and troubleshoot effectively using various IOS-based commands
    • Familiar with spanning-tree (RSTP, PVST, MSTP, R-PVST)
    • Understanding of the rules that impact root selection and loop avoidance.
    • Able to identify and troubleshoot broadcast storms using various IOS-based tools and TCPDUMP data
  • TCPDUMP and Packet capture software (Ethereal/Wireshark)
    • Have the ability to perform a capture traffic using both TCPDUMP and a gui-based capture software like Wireshark.
    • Able to analyze and interpret traffic flows to identify tcp anomalises, troubleshoot application instability, and identify potential issues with network devices
  • Firewall logic/access control lists
    • Able to build/troubleshoot standard and extended access lists
    • Familiarity using sequence numbers for ACL management
    • Familiar with stateful firewalls and how they interact with TCP/UDP based applications
  • Port/Network address translation
    • Able to create, modify and troubleshoot P/NAT statements using various IOS-based commands
  • Network management
    • Familiarity with Zenoss, MRTG, HP Openview, and Big Brother
  • Knowledge of collection systems
  • Strong communications skills


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Willing to be part of a team that provides after hours call-in support on a rotating basis and respond in a timely manner
  • Willing to work non-standard hours when necessary
  • Ability to work in high pressure, highly flexible environment against both short and long term requirements.
