Job Description:  This position is Section Manager of the Opto-Mechanical Space Engineering Section consisting of 10-15 senior mechanical system design engineers. The Section Manager reports to the department manager for Mechanisms and Deployable Products within the Integrated Vehicle Systems & Electromechanical Design Center of Excellence. Approximately a quarter of the section head’s time will be spent performing leadership, people management, and supervisory duties such as management of personnel (performance review, direction & coaching), program/project reviews, coordination of job assignments, staffing, recruiting, and developing IRAD and process improvement plans. In addition, the individual will support technology and business development activities (not just flight programs), support proposals (generate schedules and cost estimates), and support design reviews. The balance of the Section Manager’s time will be spent supporting flight programs by providing engineering support during design, qualification, manufacturing, integration, and test of products. The duties include establishing and reviewing materials and processing requirements, plans, procedures, and documentation. Also included are program support, drawing review, subcontractor process development, qualification & certification, and development & documentation of processing and materials requirements.
Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:
A BS degree in engineering (Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering) or related technical discipline and a minimum 10 years of relevant opto-mechanical and general mechanical system design with an emphasis in lasers, cryocoolers, and instrument design experience is desired. Strong communication, leadership and team building skills are essential. Must be a self-starter, independently directed, with good problem solving skills. Travel may be required for this position. Active SSBI clearance is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Prior functional management experience is preferred. An advanced technical degree is preferred. Experience with industry standard design tools including CATIA V5, Smarteam, Engineering Central, AIAA S-114-2005 Mechanical Moving Assemblies and Geometric Dimensioning &Tolerance applications (GD&T) is advantageous. Hands-on working experience in the design, fabrication, and testing of mechanical products including lasers, cryocoolers, and instruments are preferred. 6-Sigma training is desirable.
