An excellent career opportunity is currently available for a Principal Water R&D Technologist within UOP's Research and Development organization located in Des Plaines, IL. This position affords a unique opportunity to lead the development and implementation of new water process technologies, as well as improvements to current water treatment applications to support the growth of this strategic product platform.


Position responsibilities:


  • Provide the primary technical leadership for one or more related water treatment technologies.

  • Maintain and manage the technical knowledge base for assigned technology areas.

  • Evaluate/screen new technologies for resourcing/follow-up

  • Invent technology improvements and breakthroughs to incorporate innovations into UOP's technology offering for assigned area.

  • Lead research and development projects, including planning, championing and delivering assigned programs on budget, on time and within the constraints of agreed scope and resources.

  • Coordinate the workflow for a project team, including resource planning, scheduling, and prioritizing workload. Working with manager/team leader to identify and resolve resource issues.

  • Monitor the industry in assigned technology area for opportunities and threats. Coordinating with technology area management and Marketing and Sales.

  • Provide recommendations of future projects in assigned technology area.

  • Maintain effective interactions with other senior scientists and engineers and mentoring junior staff.

  • Evaluate and integrate developments in other technology areas for application in assigned technology area and promote flow of innovation from assigned technology area to other technologies.

  • Advise management on Intellectual Property strategy for assigned technology area.

  • Ensure that experimentation under his/her supervision is conducted in a safe manner. Following and promoting HS&E policy and guidelines.


Basic Candidate Qualifications:


  • A PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, or adsorption engineering is required with a focus on water treatment. In lieu of a PhD a Master's degree with 10 years will also be considered



  • Minimum 5 years post graduate industrial R&D experience within the water treatment industry is required.



  • Expertise with one or more core water treatment technologies (ie; ion exchange, membranes, chemical treatment, etc…) is required.


Additional Candidate Qualifications:


  • Working knowledge of contaminant removal evaluation and characterization techniques and a willingness to learn, on a continuing basis are required.

  • Organic or polymer chemistry background or experience is a plus.

  • Strong project management skills are necessary.

  • Ability to effectively lead multi-disciplinary project teams is required.

  • Good interpersonal skills and capability to work effectively with multiple departments.

  • A record of patents and publications demonstrating innovative R&D contributions is necessary.

  • Ability to travel 10% annually domestically and overseas is required.
