UOP LLC, headquartered in Des Plaines, Illinois, is a leading international supplier and licensor of process technology, catalysts, adsorbents, process plants, and consulting services to the petroleum refining, petrochemical, and gas processing industries. UOP is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Honeywell International, Inc. and is part of Honeywell's Performance Materials and Technologies strategic business group.


There is an immediate opening for a Lead Hydroprocessing Process Development Specialist in the Hydroprocessing and Heavy Oil Development Group. This group plays a leading role in development of new and improvement of existing hydroprocessing, heavy oil and alternative energy technologies for UOP's licensees, including process, catalyst, and equipment technology. The successful candidate will apply refining chemistry and engineering technology to conversion of hydrocarbon feed stocks to clean transportation fuels. The successful candidate will be involved with development of new hydroprocessing and catalyst technologies and work with other Senior Refining Technologists in the development of new projects and will take a leading role in projects that are selected. The candidate will also periodically support marketing efforts by UOP's business units by providing technical support including customer demonstration testing, writing technical papers, developing yield estimates and performing economic analyses.


Accountabilities of the position include:


  • Providing technical support in Hydroprocessing and heavy oil technologies in Development, including hydroprocessing and heavy oil experiments performed in the UOP pilot plants and other new technologies that are presently in early stages of development.

  • Interfacing with other UOP departments including Pilot Plants, Analytical, and Advanced Characterization to design and interpret robust experiments and to diagnose problems.

  • Leading or contributing as a member of new technology delivery teams for internal development projects and collaborations with external companies. These projects are of varied complexity, including continuous improvement of UOP's knowledge base on the fundamentals of hydroprocessing and heavy oil technology such as process configuration, reactor internals design, catalyst formulation, and reaction kinetics.

  • Planning, championing and delivering assigned programs on budget, on time and within the constraints of agreed scope and resources.

  • Document work output.

  • Acting as a technical contact for hydroprocessing and heavy oil technology marketing and sales personnel.

  • Providing commercial sales support for customer presentations, design and operating requirements, and technical papers.

  • Evaluating and integrating developments in other technology areas for applications in hydroprocessing.

  • Evaluating technical feasibility of proposed projects and providing recommendations for future projects in assigned technology areas.

Basic Candidate Requirements:


  • BS in Chemical Engineering, together with a minimum of 7 years post graduate process development experience in support of the commercialization of new types of refining process technologies is required

  • Or an MS or PhD in Chemical Engineering, together with a minimum of 3 years post graduate process development experience in support of the commercialization of new types of refining process technologies is required


Additional Candidate Qualifications:


  • Experience in hydroprocessing catalyst design and evaluation is desired

  • Design or operations experience in hydroprocessing technology is highly desired

  • Experience in general refinery processing technology is desired

  • Strong interest in R&D work

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills

  • Demonstrated leadership ability and project management is important

  • Ability to travel 10% annually domestically and overseas, as needed
