Honeywell Performance Materials and Technologies is a global leader in providing customers with high-performance solutions, including fluorine products; specialty films and additives; advanced fibers and composites; intermediates; specialty chemicals; electronic materials and chemicals; and technologies and materials for petroleum refining. SUMMARY: Honeywell Electronic Materials has an opening for an R&D Engineer who will be responsible for the creation of profitable, new products for the electronic packaging of microelectronics. This includes the invention, design, preparation, and testing of materials for electrical interconnect, other electronics packaging applications. This also includes working with external partners to leverage outside capability for new product creation. The job requires high quality, timely work, and continuous improvement. The primary focus will be on developing new products related to electronics packaging. This position will also lead development projects on new products, new materials, new processes for electrical interconnect, and implementation of the development team objectives consistent with the overall interconnect and packaging group's strategic direction. Must be able to achieve timely research & development, and production transfer of new products to high volume global manufacturing. Projects will focus on electrical interconnect materials in the areas of packaging high end microprocessors & LED's. The ideal candidate would have a background in materials science and metallurgy with experience in casting and electro-refining. MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY includes the following. (Other duties may be assigned.):
- Fundamental understanding of metallurgy, material science, electro-chemistry, mechanics, and heat transfer
- Fundamental understanding of electronic packaging including qualification testing (thermal and mechanical)
- Solid fundamental understanding of metallurgical concepts including, but not limited to; soldering, brazing, casting, zone refining, wire drawing, interfacial reactions, thermo-mechanical processing, casting, phase diagrams, and diffusion
- Support process and application development for electrical interconnect products
- Work with members of the development team, the commercial group, customers and OEM's to identify, define and conduct development projects.
- Work with process engineering, equipment, quality and production departments to transfer developmental technology into production.
- Provide technical support as needed for existing products.
- Be able to use statistical problem solving methods, participate in brain storming exercises and conduct designed experiments as needed.
- Identify, design, conduct and evaluate experiments and experimental testing programs for various projects. This also includes the ability to conduct a measurement system analysis.
- Thoroughly characterize new products and processes so that they transfer seamlessly and cost effectively into production with high yields.
- Develop robust manufacturing processes in collaboration with other team members.
- Provide regular updates on project status through accepted communication modes. Examples include the NPD system, e-mail, meetings & presentations
- Follow six sigma methodologies in day to day activities including statistical problem solving methods, designed experiments, measurement system analysis, product scorecard and any other black belt tools that apply to the problem at hand
- Keep up to date on technology developments, trends, innovations and issues related to electronic materials, micro electronic packaging, and materials processing technologies
- Recommend new manufacturing technologies and processes that complement or expand HEM's core competencies
- Keep a lab notebook, generate patents and write technical papers as appropriate.
- Prepare electronic packaging materials for shipment to the customers and other locations within Honeywell. Properly follow documentation, order entry, labeling, packing and shipping procedure and processes
- Follow standard operating procedures to insure consistent quality
- Follow safety procedures, including the use of common sense to ensure safe handling of all raw materials, intermediate and finished products
- Insure high quality processing and testing of formulation and materials with best possible accuracy and shortest possible turnaround times
- Be able to obtain, analyze, and present results in a clear and timely manner
- Must be self-motivated and proactive
- Must be able to work independently on assigned task with minimum supervision
- Must be able to work effectively with others and demonstrate a positive teamwork approach to all job functions
- Must be adaptable and flexible to changing work environment and priorities.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- BS in Metallurgy or Materials Science and 7 years related industry experience including a significant metallurgical component; or
- Masters degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science or Mechanical Engineering (Metallurgy or Materials BS desired) with 5 years related industry experience; or
- PhD in Metallurgy or other related field, or 3 years experience in the thermal industry with a MS in Material Science, Metallurgical Engineering or other related degree
- Expertise knowledge of electro-chemistry and materials science is required
- Knowledge of materials for packaging and customer applications
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with electronic packaging materials is strongly desired
- Knowledge and hands-on skills in some or all of the following: with casting, electro-refining, wire drawing, metal powders, alpha particle measurement, die bonding, wire bonding, flip-chip architecture (under bumping and UBM), 3d packaging, Pb-free alloys
- Knowledge of surface science and polymer chemistry is desired
- Strong communication and problem-solving abilities are required
- Knowledge of DOE's, statistical analysis of data and SPC is desired
