A person in this position does the following; maintains repairs and modifies aircraft structures, structural components and engines of complex to extreme difficulty, maintains and repairs aircraft components including but not limited to flight controls, engines, hydraulics, pneumatics, fuel systems and mechanical components, and applies technical knowledge of airframe and power plant systems in determining equipment malfunctions and applies technical expertise in restoring equipment condition and operation.
This worker also applies professional technical expertise and guidance to solve complex problems by interpreting technical data such as blueprints or manufactures' manuals. Work typically requires a thoroughly comprehensive knowledge of aircraft mechanical component troubleshooting/repair procedures and replacement of components, a thorough knowledge of aircraft sheet metal/structural modification and repair and the ability to determine functionality of non-complex electrical systems. A detailed knowledge of aircraft unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, cable tensiometers, sheet metal brakes and sheers, etc. is required.
The incumbent must possess the experience and ability to provide technical support to structural/mechanical engineers and customers alike, must possess excellent organizational skills in prioritizing workload to meet aircraft delivery schedule. This worker will be required to make entries in aircraft logs and records, and is responsible for providing guidance and technical expertise to lower level technicians throughout all aircraft modifications and/or maintenance efforts.
Performs developmental, experimental and production aircraft maintenance, repair, modification, installation, and testing tasks in a field of specialization; electrical / electronic, mechanical or instrumentation. Instructs, coordinates and performs the duties / functions of Flight Test personnel in area(s) of assignment. Determines the sequence for installing, removing, maintaining, repairing or fabricating critical aircraft components, or electrical / electronic, mechanical or instrumentation systems. Performs testing, rework and repair in various fields of specialization. Applies shop theory and skills in accomplishing assigned tasks working from incomplete engineering, electronic data, blueprints, sketches, engineering drawings, technical orders and written and verbal instructions. Works from blueprints, engineering orders, schematics, repair manuals and other technical documents on aircraft electrical / electronic, mechanical, plumbing, and hydraulics, power plant, structures or instrumentation systems. Performs drilling, reaming, fitting, assembly, trimming, riveting, splicing, insulating and other associated duties as assigned. Performs electrical, mechanical or instrumentation maintenance, repair and testing in support of specific flight test projects. Constructs, troubleshoots, calibrates, adjusts, tests, and maintains various types of complex aircraft equipment, components, devices or systems. Performs modifications and adjustments as necessary. Notifies lead personnel or supervision of any / all malfunctions, defects and damages of equipment, material and product. Checks work for completeness and accuracy. Performs Production Accountability duties associated with the processing, verficiation, quality auditing and inspection of assemblies, parts and tooling for which the individual has been delegated production accountability. May be required to work in other fields incidental to, and in connection with completion of assignment. May be required to perform other related duties as assigned. Directs the work of an assigned group of five or more employees, one of which is in their own classification, as specifically delegated by supervision, exercising a complete knowledge of the work operation performed, machinery and equipment used and the skill, craft or trade practices required, demonstrating the ability to communicate, direct, guide, train, instruct, advise and gain the cooperation of others in the satisfactory completion of the work performed in the area assigned.
Makes all necessary preliminary preparations and determines the most practical and economical methods and sequence of operations and assigns work to best utilize available skills, equipment and other such resources.
Performs satisfactorily work of the level required of the leads basic classification as well as any of the work performed by the assigned group. Lays out parts and/or work, sets up machines, tools or equipment, and runs or assembles first articles etc., for demonstration purpose to other employees or group lead. Checks own work and work of others to verify quality of workmanship. Notifies individual workers of discrepancies or errors in workmanship and gives guidance and instruction with respect to appropriate corrective measures and/or methods of improvement.
Coordinates with other organizations such as Planning, Scheduling, Programming, Manufacturing Engineering, Maintenance, Tooling, Manufacturing Control, Inspection etc. to facilitate expedient resolution to problems that may otherwise delay timely completion of work. Keep supervision advised of potential problems, group performance, safety problems, and workmanship etc. Instructs assigned group to insure good housekeeping and safety practices.
Basic Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent and 13 years of experience.
