Summary of Position: This position is accountable for coordinating the Transformer Business Unit Core Steel and Core related strategic direction. Additionally managing projects in order to reduce product cost through optimal use of core steel, and developing new suppliers and grades of core steel. This person will lead and coordinate cross-functional project teams who design, purchase, and manufacture transformer core steel and cores. The position requires in-depth knowledge of single phase and three phase transformers, core and coil design rules in order to optimally define the strategic direction for core steel and core steel technology. Considerable interaction with Sourcing and core steel suppliers is required. Experience in magnetics, transformer design, statistical analysis and manufacturing processes is also required. Position Responsibilities: · Work with Sourcing to develop and execute the strategic direction for core steel supply stream and technology. Research core steel suppliers worldwide and understand key core steel technologies including grain-oriented steels, Hi-B and amorphous · Develop the strategic direction on core manufacturing techniques from both an internal and external supply standpoint · Understand competitive core design and core steel concepts in order to continually improve the methods of core design and manufacturing at Cooper as compared to our global competition · Conduct core steel cost evaluations to determine breakeven points among core steel grades for strategic direction and supply stream information · Monitor core performance for all product lines and evaluate and improve core performance curves · Understand all plant core manufacturing processes to enable best practices sharing among them; including core building, squeezing and annealing processes · Drive core performance variability reductions through design and manufacturing improvements · Reduce transformer costs through improved core performance · Develop concepts to improve core design efficiency, coordinate prototypes and production ramp-up · Evaluate worldwide techniques to build cores and develop plans to utilize concepts which benefit CPS Transformers · Plan and execute all phases of new product development which involve core research, design options, specification writing, development testing, and manufacturing · Provide technical support and maintain liaison with Manufacturing regarding technical manufacturing problems relating to design, specifications and functional performance of cores and core steel · Work with QA and suppliers to resolve quality issues, and when appropriate, authorize and document deviations · Prepare required engineering reports and records pertinent to assigned projects and product areas · Manage core steel specifications · Work with Sourcing, to establish and maintain solid vendor relationships with core steel, core manufacturing, or core steel related parts suppliers · Exercise lean principles and methodologies in pursuit of eliminating waste and increasing customer value within core design and production Job Requirements : Position Qualifications: - Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Mechanical or other Engineering Science discipline; knowledge of magnetics a plus.
- Knowledge and experience with contemporary tools such as FEA, CAD, Lean, Error - Proofing, Capability Analysis, PPAP, SPC, etc.
· Strong Project Management experience; Phase Gate process knowledge needed - 8 - 15 years experience in design, development and/or product engineering
- Knowledge of product and product application, manufacturing and test methods
- Knowledge of required test and application standards
- Must be a self-starter with the ability to work alone, or in a team environment with limited supervision
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Must be able to function in a multi-tasking capacity
- Solid computer and data analysis skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook; solid knowledge of AutoCAD (3D/Inventor a strong plus); SAP experience a plus.
