Rio Tinto Kennecott Utah Copper is currently looking for a Principal Advisor - Cornerstone Construction Safety & Health for the Cornerstone Project team located in Salt Lake City, Utah.


Kennecott Utah Copper (KUC) is a highly vertically integrated, world class poly-metallic mining and processing operation that produces approximately 300ktpa of copper cathode, 18Mlb molybdenum, 400koz of gold and 3Moz of silver annually. While the KUC operation has operated for over 100 years, significant further open pit and underground and potential remain. KUC is 100% owned by Rio Tinto and is the largest managed operation within the Copper group portfolio. KUC's Cornerstone Project is an evaluation of the potential to expand the life of operations to 2028 and is tasked with feasibility studies, and implementation if approved, of a major program of projects related to open pit wall underground depressurization and dewatering, major process facilities and tailings impoundment expansion. Most of the work is contracted out and therefore the role will involve providing support in dealing with contractors, influencing them, and managing them to achieve outstanding results.


This is a high visibility role with high expectations and the potential for a very significant contribution.


This position has the following accountabilities:


  • Provides tactical support to the Cornerstone Project in surface construction and underground safety, through calls and visits, problem analysis and solving, and interaction with KUC corporate and plant HSE

  • Adapts Rio Tinto and KUC standards to the Cornerstone Project, writes guidelines, solicits input from project personnel and contractors

  • Leads the development and implementation of a comprehensive HSE management plan for the Cornerstone Project working in collaboration with Cornerstone general management, project and construction management area leads, EPCM contractors, and KUC corporate and plant HSE

  • Leads the implementation of the performance standards and some elements in the HSE management system in the Cornerstone Project, including: risk management, confined space entry, vehicles and driving, isolation, electrical safety, working at heights, ground control, fire prevention, hoisting, emergency rescue, contractor management, change management, etc

  • Looks for opportunities to enhance current practices

  • Conducts HSE interactions, audits, and reviews. These include formal audits and also informal, occasional spot checks. Prepares reports. Follows-up on corrective actions

  • When needed, creates new tools with the help of operational personnel and corporate HSE

  • Drives program consistency across all construction, commissioning and start up operations as well as leads the sharing of best practices

  • Maintains current knowledge of key regulatory requirements for each construction area

  • Supports the creation and implementation of leadership and cultural safety initiatives such as worker luncheons, contractor safety committees, safety culture assessments, leading indicator systems etc

  • Provides support in the investigation of major incidents

  • Provides training as needed, not only to project HSE advisors, but also to EPCM contractors, field contractors and other populations as required

  • When required, will manage safety consultants to accomplish specific tasks

Specific Competencies Required:


  • Experience: minimum 10 years of hands-on experience in mining safety, including heavy industrial plant construction, project development; program management, project implementation, and improvement; advising, training, etc. Experience in underground mining highly desirable

  • Proven record of producing exemplary safety results and improvements

  • Strong knowledge of behavioral based safety leadership principles, and major systems (electrical safety, isolation, ground support, underground rescue, etc)

  • Experience in contractor management

  • Education: safety engineer, mining engineer, or equivalent. Advanced degree preferred

  • Certified Safety Professional desirable

  • Strong knowledge of MSHA and OSHA regulations

  • TapRoot certified

  • Knowledgeable in a Semi Quantitative Risk Assessment methodology

  • Rio Tinto certified safety auditor
