Job Description: 
Rio Tinto Minerals (RTM), is currently hiring for a Human Resources Advisor to support the Human Resources division from their Denver, Colorado global head office.


RTM operates globally providing Talc and Borates to world markets. Denver is the headquarters for RTM and therefore often serves as the center from which global operating units and functions are managed. The HR Advisor is a professional advisor role for the HR Americas division of Rio Tinto Minerals, in support of the RTM Corporate Office and to the Regional HR teams in the Americas.


The HR Advisor provides generalist HR support and advice in the areas of recruitment, employee relations, policies, HR information systems, and benefits. The HR Advisor manages and participates in organizational projects from an Americas and (at times) global perspective.


Note - In September 2010 Rio Tinto announced that the Talc business which is part of the RTM Strategic Business Unit (SBU) has been formally put up for divestment.


The successful candidate will be able to:


  • Provide ongoing support for HSEQ initiatives to ensure alignment with the sustainable safety culture.

  • Provide general HR support and advice to relevant clients in the Corporate Office in areas such as employee relations, recruitment, HRIS, remunerations, benefits, performance management, career development plans, and the company bonus plan (STIP).

  • Support and at times lead the end-to-end Recruitment process for Corporate Office to source, select, and place in a cost effective and timely manner the best available people to meet the business' objectives.

  • Partner with the HR Coordinator to maintain the integrity and accuracy of ADP, Kronos, and other Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS), including writing and continuously improving associated procedures.

  • Trouble-shooting, documenting, and advising HR colleagues on relevant procedures.

  • Participate in and sometimes lead HR projects, such as Service Award programs, Educational Assistance programs, and policy development; and implementing various HR initiatives for Corporate Office (such as performance management, STIP, and policies).

  • Participate in various RT US collaborative projects involving areas such as benefits, graduate recruitment, and HRIS alignment.

  • Collaborate with Rio Tinto Benefit Services on RTM benefits and changes to benefits.

  • Coordinate various compliance reports and governmental regulations, such as EEO reports, Veterans 100, Wage & Hour.

  • Provide support to the Corporate HR Manager, Sr. HR Advisor and GM HR Americas for organizational projects as they arise, such as organizational restructures, global Talent Reviews, leadership development initiatives, and Mergers & Acquisitions.


The qualified candidate will possess the following credentials and characteristics:


  • Drive positive Safety Culture. Ensure compliance with RTM safety, health and environmental standards and procedures.

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Labor Relations, Organizational Psychology, Business, or related field. Masters Degree or MBA, desirable.

  • 2 - 4 years of prior experience in Human Resources is required in a large, multi-cultural, fast-paced and dynamic organization.

  • Certification with Society for Human Resources Practitioners, preferred.

  • General to advanced knowledge and aptitude with HRIS, including organizational databases and integrated performance management systems.

  • Sound recruitment and selection skills, including targeted behavioral interviewing skills.

  • Advanced verbal communication and influencing skills that can be applied in difficult situations.

  • Public speaking skills.

  • Advanced English written skills for reports suitable for submission to all levels of the business.

  • Intermediate to advanced experience with the Microsoft Suite, experience with HRIS, ie SAP, ADP, etc. required.

  • Evidence of the ability to work with highly confidential information.
