Rio Tinto Minerals (RTM), part of the Rio Tinto group, has an immediate opening for a Mine Operations Superintendent based in Boron, California. The position is located on-site at our Boron Operations in the Mine Operations Support Department.


Rio Tinto Minerals operates globally providing talc and borates to world markets. RTM is also a global leader in safety performance. The Mine Operations Superintendent provides leadership, direction and performance in Mine Operations, supporting the Sustainable Safety Culture and practicing Organizational Effectiveness concepts. Reporting to the Mining Director and the Mine Operations Superintendent shares responsibility for managing an operating budget of $40M annually. The Mine Operations Superintendent is responsible for ensuring compliance with equipment and budgetary metrics establish by Rio Tinto.


The successful candidate will be able to:


  • Provide leadership and sets direction.

  • Create opportunity for positive change.

  • Create and support collaborative opportunities.

  • Promote and support collaboration across the site and business units

  • Review cost & production data and implement solutions to improve.

  • Control spending and drive improvements that deliver costs at or lower than budget.

  • Establish a safe, transparent, and constructive culture that rewards good behavior and performance using sustainable safety and organizational effectiveness processes.

  • Embed Sustainable Safety Culture.

  • Ensure awareness and compliance with State, Local, and Company regulations/guidelines.

  • Embed Organizational Effectiveness.

  • Coach and mentor staff to increase overall team effect.

  • Coach and mentor supervisors to deliver safety, efficiency & results.

  • Create and maintain succession plan.

  • Deliver performance against budget and Rio Tinto Asset Management goals.

  • Participate in Mine planning processes.


Qualifications:


  • Drive positive, behavior based Safety Culture. Ensure compliance with RTM safety, health and environmental standards and procedures.

  • Engineering Degree preferred with at least 5 years in operations leadership roles with increasing responsibility. Will consider non-degreed candidates with outstanding track record of performance with 10 years experience in mining or associated industry.

  • Blasting license helpful.

  • Familiarity with MSHA and State environmental compliance, understanding & application of behavior-based and/or people-based safety initiatives.

  • Comprehensive understanding of mobile equipment efficiency metrics and performance drivers.

  • Comprehensive understanding and application of the budgeting and forecasting processes.

  • Understanding of ISO 14001 and 9001 systems.

  • Advanced knowledge of Word, Excel, Project and other Microsoft Office applications. Demonstrated use of Excel for analyzing data and interpreting results. Using these tools and others, the Superintendent is responsible to implement system changes to improve the business and communicate with employees & other stakeholders to drive change.

  • Advanced knowledge of CMMS (Ellipse, SAP) systems and financial modeling software.
