The Rio Tinto Diamonds and Minerals group (D&M) comprises diamonds, borates, talc, titanium dioxide feedstock, high purity iron, metal powders, zircon and rutile mining and refining operations. The business is headquartered in London with operations and sales offices located worldwide.


Diamonds and Minerals has developed a strategy to Improve, Build and Grow the Product Group and deliver $1B of earnings by 2015. A key part of this increase in earnings will come from improvements in the operations, through areas including increased throughput, improved efficiency, manufacture of products commanding increased margins and reduced costs.



A new opportunity has arisen for a Business Improvement Manager in Diamonds and Minerals. You will support Diamonds and Minerals Businesses in implementing our strategy to 'Improve, Build and Grow'.


Your role will entail the following:


  • Supporting and challenging the businesses in developing their improvement plans

  • Encouraging and identifying opportunities for collaboration, and supporting businesses to capture these opportunities.

  • Providing an overview of Business Improvement at Diamonds and Minerals level to the Diamonds and Minerals ExCo, and assisting them to identify gaps requiring action.

  • Providing and facilitating coaching and mentoring for Business Improvement specialists and leaders in the businesses in specific Business Improvement tools

  • Championing identification and sharing of leading practices and successes worthy of recognition at Product group level.

  • Contributing to the development of the Diamonds and Minerals leadership framework and content.






  • Bachelor of Business or Engineering

  • Solid experience in Business, Operational Leadership, Technical and Process Improvement Roles

  • Lean Six Sigma Black Belt or Green Belt qualified

  • Demonstrated strong understanding and ability to implement lean principles and tools.

  • Proven ability to lead and mentor/coach others.

  • Ability to create momentum, motivation, partnering and foster organizational change.

  • Interpersonal, analytical/quantitative and problem solving skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to organize and lead cross-functional groups and multi-cultural teams

  • Ability to perform technical, financial and cultural analysis on improvement ideas


Preferred locations for the role are Montreal or Denver, other possible locations include London or Perth.
