Position Description

Under the direction of the Business Unit Manager, is responsible for overall manufacturing operations in the Richmond facility.  The Business Unit Leader position requires the ability to be action-oriented with demonstrated ability to lead teams and drive for results.

 

The individual should be proficient in leading/managing manufacturing key performance indicators (quality, safety, delivery, cost and morale).  Must also have excellent communication skills.

 

While in the role, the individual will be responsible for leading an entire shift, usually comprised of several departments (Processing, Packing, Maintenance, etc), fulfilling safety and quality norms in accordance with principles of continuous improvement, and delivering KPI's in a consistent way.

 

Responsible for ensuring consistency across departments and shifts in areas of safety, quality, housekeeping standards and discipline.  The individual is required to coordinate as needed with Quality Assurance, Business Development, Production Logistics, Plant Controlling and Human Resources to deliver on all manufacturing targets.  Position requires involvement in KSRMP activities, environmental compliance activities, hiring and staffing, ODC involvement, etc.  Also, a main responsibility will be tracking and disseminating attendance and disciplinary information.    

 

Essential Functions of the Role

Lead section/unit ensuring the most cost-effective production process while meeting production schedules at the lowest possible cost. Manage team leaders/production/operations supervisors ensuring people development and training are implemented while developing a team culture.  Drive business results and follow up on shift.

 

Responsible for section/unit compliance in all safety and quality regulations, policies, training and education requirements.  Drive failure analysis process on shift and ensure proper follow up and completion. 

 

Lead productivity and CI projects on the shift focusing on permanent controllable cost reduction.  Drive Six Sigma improvement projects.

 

Integrate technical/maintenance expertise into the section/unit, leading all total predictive maintenance activities.  Drive maintenance activities on shift.  Involved with week long maintenance shutdowns and help coordinate activities across all departments and shifts.

 

Responsible for collecting costs and line performance and tracking deviations and responsible for taking immediate action for improvement.

 

Ensure shift runs to budget for labor (direct & indirect), B&R (scrap) is at or below target, and production is at or above standard.  Need assignable cause and follow up if above are not met.

 

Manage & elevate emergency situations on the off shifts.  Involved with troubleshooting on off shifts.

 

Must lead by example.  Schedule must be flexible.
Qualifications

A four year bachelor's degree is required, preferably in Engineering, Business, Quality or Food Science.  Candidate should have a broad education and experience background in such fields as food science, food manufacturing, production management, plant operations, production processes, quality control and/or other related areas.  Must have a minimum of 3 years managing a shift and a demonstrated track record of meeting targets and driving improvements.

 

Candidate must have strong leadership qualities and be able to motivate and manage others.  Experience with products and processes highly desirable, as well as experience working in a union environment.  Must have well-developed communication skills, both written and oral.
