Job Description: 
  • Assume primary responsibility for US federal income tax compliance and assist with preparation of quarterly and annual income tax provision.
  • Maintain and monitor complete and accurate records and workpapers for all projects completed to support the tax filings and tax positions, as well as support the Tax Department’s database initiative for efficient record retention.
  • Facilitate the preparation, review, and analysis of workpapers allowing for the calculation of quarterly and annual effective tax rates, the roll forward of tax related general ledger accounts, the FIN 48 liability and other items necessary to support the financial reporting group in preparation of the 10K, 10Qs and annual report in accordance with FAS 109 and other tax related accounting pronouncements.   Ensure that all tax work performed is in compliance with standards and controls established to meet the requirements of Sarbanes Oxley, Section 404.
  • Keep abreast of current accounting and tax standards and legislation and future issues through continuous professional reading and continuing education programs. 
  • Research, prepare, and analyze documentation and supporting memoranda to assist with implementing various international and domestic tax planning techniques. 
  • Prepare, review, and analyze schedules and documentation to support responses to Information Document Requests (IDR’s).
  • Participate on teams outside of the tax area to ensure the tax requirements of outside projects are met, monitor the activities of our domestic entities in other jurisdictions to ensure proper compliance with our established tax planning procedures, and assist other Sonoco departments with projects as needed.  
  • Provide support and assistance to other areas of the tax department with tax compliance as needed.
Required Skills
  • Requires a Bachelors degree in Accounting and CPA certification (with special exceptions).  The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree with an emphasis in taxation.
  •  
  • Strong tax technical/compliance skills and knowledge of tax accounting rules.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and research skills. 
  • Established leadership and team building skills.  Management skills and/or experience are a plus.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and experience working with CorpTax, Oracle and Hyperion software is beneficial.  Experience with other tax and accounting software and research programs is also helpful.
  • Must exemplify initiative and ambition toward performing required tasks and mastering and improving the quality and efficiency of tax processes through process analysis and documentation.
  • Must be committed toward building and maintaining good rapport with other members of the tax department team and other areas of Sonoco.
  • Must serve as a sound, accountable steward of the company’s money.
Required Experience
  • 3 years of tax compliance and tax accounting experience.  Prior industry accounting experience is preferred.
